The 2010 Championship Target
18 Jan 2010
We have just released our carbon saving target for the 2010 championship year. The goal to the end of September 2010 is to further reduce the carbon footprint of Croke Park by 6,700 tonnes of CO2. This will be achieved through energy savings within Croke Park and by fans making carbon saving pledges. Reaching this target will mean that we are well on our way to making Croke Park carbon neutral by 2014.
We are projecting savings of 3,200 tonnes to come from the Environmental Management System (EMS) that has been put in place by the environmental engineers working on Cúl Green. The EMS applies the highest standards and was awarded its ISO14001 certification following an independent external EMS audit by SGS Ireland Ltd. The energy savings within the stadium for 2010 involve sourcing Croke Park’s electricity from a renewable wind farm supply, continuing the energy monitoring, installation of water conservation equipment and improving energy efficiency through the building and waste management system.
The remaining 3,500 tonnes required to reach the 2010 target, we hope, will come from supporters of Cúl Green making energy saving pledges through the website. Pledges include taking public transport to matches rather than your car, not over-filling the kettle, switching off lights when not in the room and so on.
We had an excellent response from Cúl Green fans throughout 2008 and 2009 - there were 62,000 energy saving pledges made amounting to over 6,000 tonnes worth of carbon saved. In the last twelve months over 20,000 people have supported us by registering on the site and changing their energy habits through our pledge system – saving them money and helping us towards making Croke Park carbon neutral.
There has also been a great response from GAA fans and other Cúl Green supporters through our Fan Stories section and the Facebook page which we set up last year and now has over 3,200 fans.
Please continue to support us by making a Carbon Saving Pledge today!
