Tips for an energy efficient Christmas
17 Dec 2009
In an effort to save energy and money this Christmas we’ve compiled a list of energy saving tips for the festive season. Whether cooking, driving or giving presents these should help minimise the environmental effect.
- For safety and energy efficiency switch off Christmas tree lights at night
- When cooking Christmas dinner, cover your pans when you cook. This can reduce the energy needed by up to 90%!
- If making a hot port this Christmas, only boil the amount of water you need. Every cup you boil represents 25 cups of CO2 released
- When cooking Christmas dinner, use the right size pan for the cooker ring, if you can see the heat ring it's too big and is costing you money
- If going in to town to shop this Christmas, leave the car at home and take public transport
- When buying food and presents this Christmas, look to support local crafts and suppliers whether that is buying greeting cards, a turkey or a hat for dad!
- If you must drive this Christmas, save petrol by keeping your distance and minimise the amount of breaking and accelerating you have to do
- If buying new appliances (such as fridge freezers) this Christmas make sure to purchase an ‘A’ rated energy efficient one. This can save you up to 100kg of CO2 a year
- If you have an old unruly boiler make a New Years resolution to get it replaced with an ultra efficient condensing boiler, it’ll be about 20% more efficient
After any Christmas indulgences please make a New Year’s resolution to be more energy efficient in 2010. You can make a carbon saving pledge
here that will save you money and help us make Croke Park carbon neutral.
A very happy Christmas to you from all at Cúl Green!
