2009 Overview


In 2009 there was an excellent response from Cúl Green fans with more than 50,000 energy saving pledges made amounting to over 4,500 tonnes worth of carbon saved. During the year over 10,000 people have supported us by registering on the site and changing their energy habits through our pledge system – saving them money and helping us towards making Croke Park carbon neutral.


At the same time the Environmental Management Group within the stadium were busy reaching their targets. They installed an Energy Monitoring System and a Building Management System which resulted in the stadium receiving its ISO Certification in May 2009 and 11.69% less electricity used in 2009 compared to 2008.

Cúl Green wins Golden Spider Award

We are delighted to announce that the Cúl Green website won the “Best Community and Charity Website” Award at the 13th Golden Spider Awards last night. The Awards were held at the Burlington hotel in Dublin. ESB, the GAA and all at Croke Park are very pleased that the website and the support of the fans on the Cúl Green initiative have been recognised in this way.

ISO14001

Croke Park receives ISO Certification

ISO14001 certification is a key objective of the Cúl Green initiative. Croke Park achieved a major milestone in the Cúl Green Initiative in May by gaining ISO14001 certification for the Environmental Management System (EMS) at the Stadium. The certification was granted following an independent external EMS audit by SGS Ireland Ltd.

Cúl Green – website update

11 May 2009

The Cúl Green website was launched in August 2008 and based on user feedback that we received through our recent survey we have released an updated version of the website. Since the site was first launched we have had an exceptional response from Croke Park fans and others in support of making Croke Park carbon neutral – there have been over 33,000 pledges made amounting to over 3,500 tonnes of carbon saved.

Croke Park is Net-Carbon Neutral

01 May 2009

Croke Park has become one of the first net-carbon neutral stadiums in the world. ESB and the GAA are very happy to announce that the stadium – which attracted almost two million visitors last year - has reduced its carbon footprint by 4,500 tonnes, reaching the standard required to deem it a carbon-neutral venue.

Croke Park Composting and ISO Audits

The Cúl Green Team working within Croke Park has been busy preparing for the ISO14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) Certification Audit. A pre-certification audit was conducted at the Stadium on Tuesday, 7th April.

Renewable Energy at Croke Park

Environmental Engineers within Croke Park have done extensive studies into the possibilities for renewable energy at the stadium. Renewable energy describes energy that is drawn from naturally occurring sources such as sunlight, wind, tides and geothermal heat.
