2008 Overview
The ESB, GAA and Croke Park launched Cúl Green in May 2008.
In June 2008, an energy audit was carried out which identified approximately 60 possible options for energy savings. Two of the main recommendations were to establish energy monitoring and to improve the overall control of energy usage.
Other initiatives that year included Croke Park switching to a "green electricity" tariff with ESB, fans were encouraged to leave their cars at home when travelling to the stadium with the introduction of a "Park & Ride“ scheme, recycling initiatives were developed at the stadium and the environmental engineers were also assessing sources of sustainable energy within the stadium. You can read more about these projects in the section below.
Equally important was the part played by the fans, in 2008 there was an excellent response from the public in supporting the Cúl Green initiative with over 12,000 pledges made in its first four months, amounting to over 1,200 tonnes of carbon saved. The Cúl Green website also won the Green IT Project Award at the 2008 Inspired IT Awards.
